World Kidney Day: Understanding Kidneys, Nephrostomies, and Stoma Bag Use

Thursday March 13th is World Kidney Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about kidney health. In the UK about 1 in 10 people are affected by kidney stones and over 12,500 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer every year. That why it’s so important to raise awareness about the treatment and prevention of disorders and diseases affecting the kidneys.

The kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood. This produces urine which is then transported through a narrow tube called a ureter to the bladder. Sometimes conditions like kidney stones or a tumour can cause the ureter to become blocked. In some of these cases, a surgical procedure called a nephrostomy may be required.

What is a Nephrostomy?

The nephrostomy procedure involves carefully inserting the nephrostomy tube through the skin of the back and into the kidney. This is then stitched into place. The nephrostomy tube is then connected to a urostomy pouch which adheres to the skin around the opening. The pouch can then be attached to a drainage bag, sometimes called a catheter bag, which is worn on the leg. Nephrostomies are usually only a temporary measure but, in some cases, they may become permanent.

The Role of Stoma Bags in Nephrostomy Care

As the name suggests, urostomy pouches were designed to be used by people who have had a urostomy however they are also used for nephrostomies. A urostomy is a procedure where the ureters are disconnected from the bladder and connected to a portion of the small intestine that is formed into a stoma. The term stoma is often used to refer to an opening where the intestine is brought through an opening in the abdomen to divert the flow of urine or faeces, but it can simply mean a surgically created opening in the body. The output from both nephrostomies and urostomies is urine making a urostomy pouch a suitable solution for both. In the case of a nephrostomy the urostomy bag, as well as collecting urine, can help prevent the tube from being pulled out due to tension.

The Importance of a Well-Fitting Urostomy Bag

Well-fitting urostomy bags are essential for both comfort and functionality. An ill-fitting bag can lead to leaks, skin irritation, and discomfort, which can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. A secure and well-fitting pouch helps to create an effective seal around the stoma or nephrostomy tube, reducing the risk of leakage and skin issues. Skin protection is a key factor; a suitably adhered urostomy pouch prevents urine from coming into contact with the surrounding skin, minimising irritation and potential skin breakdown.

Urostomy bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate different body types and medical needs. Some have soft, flexible flanges that conform to the body's contours. Choosing the right size and fit not only improves comfort but also enhances security, allowing individuals to go about their daily activities with confidence.

Reliable Drainage Bags for Effective Urine Management

In addition to a well-fitting urostomy pouch, a reliable drainage bag is crucial for effective urine management. Many individuals with a nephrostomy use a leg bag or bedside drainage bag to collect urine throughout the day and night. These bags are designed to accommodate different levels of output, and selecting the appropriate size and capacity is important to avoid frequent emptying or discomfort.

Reliable drainage bags help maintain hygiene and improve overall convenience, making it easier for individuals to manage their condition with minimal disruption to their lifestyle.

Living with a nephrostomy requires ongoing care, but with the right knowledge and support, individuals can lead full and active lives. On this World Kidney Day, it is important to highlight the resources and advancements available to those managing kidney-related conditions. By fostering awareness and providing access to quality care, we can help ensure that every individual feels supported in their journey toward better health and well-being.
