How to Avoid Date Night Nightmares with an Ileostomy

Hey everyone! Valentines is coming up – and we know that means love is in the air with date nights all around! Date nights should be about connection, laughter, and maybe a cheeky dessert—not worrying about your stoma acting up at the worst possible moment. Whether it's a fancy dinner, a cinema trip, or something more adventurous, having an ileostomy doesn’t mean romance is off the table. It just means you need a little prep work to keep things running smoothly.
Here are some top tips for avoiding any date night disasters while still feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to enjoy yourself!
Change Your Bag Before You Head Out
Nothing says “I’m feeling fresh” like a newly changed bag. Give yourself the peace of mind by changing it before your date so you don’t have to worry about it through the date night.
Changing it beforehand means you can focus on your date, not on whether you need to make a swift exit to the bathroom. Plus, you’ll feel way more confident knowing everything is secure, in place and fresh!
Pack Some Odour Control
Let’s be real—stoma output isn’t always scentless – if ever!! And while most of the time, no one will notice a thing, it’s nice to have that extra reassurance.
Deodorants are a lifesaver, but if you forget yours, I find a few strong mints dropped into the bag can work wonders. That way, if you do need to empty your bag while you’re out, you’re not left worrying about any unexpected aromas wafting around the place! I don’t know about you – but since having my stoma, any smells I instantly think it’s me – so I like the extra reassurance!!
Avoid Foods That Turn Your Stomach into a Drama Queen
We all have those foods that make our tummies throw a tantrum. For me, it’s things like corn, nuts, and high-fibre foods—basically, anything like that turns my digestive system into a rebellious teenager.
Knowing what triggers bloating, cramping, or excessive output can save you from an evening spent shifting uncomfortably in your seat instead of enjoying your date. Stick to foods that you know sit well with you a day or so before so that you can focus on the fun, not the post-dinner regret.
Slow Things Down
Sometimes, my stoma seems to think it’s in a relay race, producing output like there’s a gold medal at stake. Not ideal when you’re trying to enjoy a relaxed evening.
If I know I’m heading out, I find taking an Imodium, eating a banana, or having a few marshmallows beforehand helps slow things down so I’m not making multiple bathroom trips during the night. That works for me but it’s all about finding what works for you, so experiment a little and see what helps keep things at a manageable pace.
Wear a Waistband
Nothing kills the date night vibe like constantly wondering if your bag is noticeable. Wearing a waistband or some supportive underwear can help keep everything secure, smooth, and out of your mind so you can focus on your night, not your stoma.
Bonus: A well-fitted waistband can give you a confidence boost, making you feel even more put-together (because let’s be honest, we all want to feel our best on a date!).
Having an ileostomy doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, feel attractive, or enjoy an amazing date night. A little planning goes a long way in making sure you’re focused on the experience, not on your stoma.
And if something does go wrong? Laugh it off. A good date won’t care, and a great date will admire how you handle it. Plus, if your stoma makes a weird noise at an awkward moment, just blame it on the chair. Works every time!
