Clothing is a silent but very powerful communicator; our clothes tell us a lot about ourselves. Clothes can camouflage, cover up and build our personal image. Clothes can create positive aspects of us, sparking self assurance and confidence.

And when it comes to looking good it’s not your shape or size that matters but the fit of the clothes. It is important to choose clothes that suit you and accentuate good features and minimize your less than perfect areas. If you have a stoma then your waist is probably the area you worry about most.

If you are high waisted: Dropped waist line garments, skirts and trousers without waist bands, low slung belts, long jackets and tops, Long tops and long skirts create the illusion of lowering your waist.

Long rise & short legs: Low waistlines, Skirts and trousers without waist bands, low slung belts, high heels, long jackets or tops, narrow skirts or trousers can create the illusion of lowering your waist without shortening your legs.

Low waisted short rise and average to short legs:
Belts and tuck ins, short tops, minimal detail in the rise area, short jackets with long or short skirts, straight waisted or belted dresses, long jackets with short skirts or narrow trousers and high heels all create the illusion of raising your waist and lengthening your legs.

Accessories

Footwear:

The height of the heel will determine if the shoe is comfortable.
A high or narrow heel adds length to the leg. If wearing a short skirt a lower heel will make legs look longer. Low fronted shoes give the illusion of longer legs and narrower ankles. Closed shoes shorten the length of the feet and legs.

When buying shoes with straps bear in mind that shoes that have low T straps work well on most people. Shoes with an ankle strap tend to only suit long legs and slim ankles. When buying boots ensure that the boot stops at the narrow part of the leg. Ballet pumps are good for anyone with average to long legs and thin ankles.

Belts:

You need a waist to wear a belt. Narrow and lightweight belts are best on petite to average size women. Wide statement belts are best suited to average or tall frames

Hats:

• Hat brims should not extend beyond your shoulders
• Larger frames should avoid pill box hats
• Petite women should not wear large brimmed hats
• Rounded crowns and brims in soft fabrics suit round faces
• Square or rectangle faces look good in flat crowns and straight brims
• Dark colours can cast a shadow over the face

Bags:

A bag should balance with your overall scale. For example a large bag will overwhelm a petite person.

Scarves:

• Petite women should avoid oversized scarves and a pashimina will swamp you
• Skinny scarves look out of proportion on large frames
• Don’t tie scarves under the chin if you have a short neck
• A long thin scarf draped around your neck will make your neck and body appear taller and slimmer
