What is a Stoma?

The word stoma comes from the Greek word meaning "opening or mouth". There are different types of stoma - Colostomy, Ileostomy, Urostomy.

Colostomy

This is an opening from the large bowel or colon, which lies usually on the left side of the abdomen. The stoma is pink in colour similar to the inside of your mouth, it doesn't hurt when touched. Faeces can come out at any time of the day or night into the bag. The colostomy can be temporary or permanent.

Loop Colostomy

This is an opening in the large bowel (colon) and lies either in the colon under the ribs or on the left hand side of the abdominal wall. The bowel is brought to the surface of the skin. It will have two openings an active end and non-active end.

Ileostomy

This is an opening from the small bowel or ileum, which lies usually on the right side of the abdomen. The faeces tends to be more liquid as it comes out of the opening into the bag before it reaches the colon where the liquid is removed from the faeces. The stoma is pink in colour similar to the inside of your mouth, it doesn't hurt when touched. The ileostomy can be temporary or permanent.

Loop Ileostomy

A single loop of small bowel (ileum), usually terminal (end) is brought to the surface of the abdominal wall. It is opened and the lining (mucosa) is stitched to the skin. The working end of this stoma will be where the faeces comes out. This is often a temporary stoma.

Urostomy/Ileal Conduit

This type of stoma is carried out to divert the flow of urine. The surgeon makes this stoma by detaching the tubes (ureter) entering the bladder and joining them to a short piece of small bowel. One piece is closed off and the other is brought to the abdomen and a stoma is made. The urine output is constant. The stoma is pink in colour similar to the inside of your mouth and it doesn't hurt when touched. The urostomy is usually a permanent type of stoma.
