Having a stoma doesn’t mean that you have to change your personal style. Straight after surgery you may want to wear big baggy clothes, but that doesn’t mean that you will have to continue that way after you’re fully healed.

Once you are feeling up to it, you should start to think about how to keep your look. It is not as hard as you might think. These tips, given to us by other ostomates, can help.

Image Male ModelsFor women: There are companies, such as White Rose and CUI Wear, which specialize in underwear and swimwear for ostomates. White Rose is particularly good for special nights.

Pleated trousers and high waists are not your only options, although they can be very flattering. Bright and patterned clothes are good to distract gaze away from your abdomen.

For men: It is worth looking into some of the companies that make underwear especially for ostomates, like CUI Wear and White Rose.

Wearing a vest under your shirt can disguise any lumps. It is important that you don’t wear anything tight around your stoma.

If you are still feeling apprehensive, it may be a good idea to book an appointment for the free personal shopping services offered by department stores such as M&S and Debenhams.
